Graeber on Zizeck on Difference
I was re-reading Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology by David Graeber, who was a few year ago pushed out of Yale in a messy internal political debacle (He now resides at University of London). I'm amazed by these little books put out by Prickly Paradigm, and how well they've chosen their authors (Marshall Sahlins and Deidre McCloskey, among them).
Anyway, I was taken by this passage,
"The theoretical question: how to reconcile all this with the disturbing theoretical insight of people like Slavoj Zizek: that if one wishes to inspire ethnic hatred, the easiest way to do so is to concentrate on the bizarre, perverse ways in which the other group is assumed to pursue pleasure. If one wishes to emphasize commonality, the easiest way is to point out that they also feel pain."
I really look forward to Possibilities and his ethnography of Direct Action. Always a beautiful writer. It's sad he's no longer in the Northeast and organizing in NYC.
