The Future of Film
A Medium in Infancy
Film is a young medium, merely an infant when compared to painting, sculpture, drama, music, literature, etc. It was born little over a century ago by Edison and the Lumiere brothers simultaneously (or nearly) in both the US and France. In the 113 years or so since the first films were shown, the medium has undergone significant revolutions. The technology has become smaller and cheaper. We have added sound, color, 3D, CGI, 70 mm film, a whole array of technological breakthroughs. Our great artists have developed techniques that are continuously refined. Eisenstein gave us montage, Godard gave us the jump-cut. In a very short period of time we have developed and mastered an entirely new art form. Now the question is, where will it go from here. I am happy to say that the future of motion pictures (film, video, TV, etc.) is democratization… and spectacle, for better or worse. Few masterpieces will come from Hollywood, most will come from your neighbors. Hollywood will shift even further into spectacle, presenting that which the average person cannot afford to present. Hollywood will survive by bringing us the spectacle of new technologies, eventually including digital actors and holograms (which will lead to a re-emergence of live theatre, as well).
